WHY CHLORINE DIOXIDE?
Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is a safe and effective broad-spectrum biocide employed across industries for decades. As a selective oxidant, ClO2 is a broad spectrum sterilant, highly effective in remediating a vast array of biological and chemical contaminants, purifying drinking water, destroying mold and mold spores, and sterilizing large spaces, including large scale barns, food processing plants, commercial kitchens, and livestock transportation. Conventional biocides are regulated and prohibited for use in addressing contaminated drinking water supplies and aquifers because of their inherent toxicity. Only chlorine dioxide, ozone, ultraviolet light, chloramine and chlorine are allowed for use in the potable water supply. However, ClO2 has marked environmental and human health advantages over alternative methods of disinfection because it does not form dangerous, potentially carcinogenic brominated or chlorinated by-products during the disinfection process.

Mr. Mason founded the chlorine dioxide panel on the American Chemistry Council in 1988 to develop standards for the chlorine dioxide industry for disinfection of drinking water and food, and for industrial applications. This group developed the data required for chlorine dioxide use as a primary disinfectant for drinking water in the United States and continues to support EPA in the development of regulations and standards for municipal water and wastewater disinfection. He is regarded as a national leading expert in response solutions to complex emergencies related to environmental contamination and human health risk. Further, he is recognized by the EPA, U.S. congressional committees, Department of Homeland Security, and other major parties as a leading authority on chlorine dioxide. Mr. Mason has been the lead technical advisor to governmental agencies and commercial businesses on numerous events, ranging from the US Capitol anthrax attack, to large biopharmaceutical and agribusiness viral contaminations, to biosecurity protocols and on-site evaluation of former Soviet Union weapons facilities.
Mr. Mason also has extensive experience in the oil & gas industry, providing treatment services for almost twenty years. Mr. Mason’s experience in the chemical industry is extensive, with duties including design and operation of chemical manufacturing facilities, health and safety audits, chemical and industrial accident investigation, determination and remediation of gas, liquid, and solid chemical releases, and the development of analytical methods.
In addition to his role with BioWALL, Mr. Bette serves as president of First Columbia, a diversified real estate investment organization committed to planning, developing, constructing, marketing, and operating high quality facilities including: master-planned campuses, regional outpatient facilities, professional office buildings, senior housing, and retail.
A 20-YEAR HISTORY OF ACCOMPLISHMENT
Hart Senate Office Building
Following the 2001 Anthrax attacks, BioWALL provided 100% cleanup of all impacted locations.
The federal government and private parties recruited BioWALL to remediate all of the structures affected by the 2001 anthrax attacks. The structures ranged in size and complexity, up to the 17-million ft.3 Brentwood postal facility. Many of the structures were highly contaminated and all required complete kill on all surfaces within, including carpeting, drywall, air ducts, electronics, furniture, and full file archives. Post-treatment, thousands of wet samples, dry samples and spore strips were tested – the most comprehensive testing on this scale ever administered – and not a single active spore remained after BioWALL’s treatment. BioWALL played a leading role in developing this testing program, which is now the gold standard for efficacy validation and clearance of large structures.
Post-Katrina New Orleans
Following Hurricane Katrina, BioWALL effectively decontaminated critical infrastructure and remediated mold conditions in business, healthcare and residential buildings.
Following Hurricane Katrina with its extensive water damage and consequential mold conditions throughout the affected areas, BioWALL was brought in at the request of government agencies to address key infrastructure contamination issues. Upon successful execution, several corporations and other entities provided funding to broaden the scope to businesses, healthcare and residential facilities to remediate extensive mold conditions.
During the 2015 outbreak of HPAI, BioWALL delivered rapid mobile response to remediate infected barns and waste materials.
BioWALL assisted USDA-APHIS in the decontamination efforts after the US H5N2 strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) decimated US egg laying production in the spring and summer of 2015. Within two weeks, BioWALL’s bio-response team fully mobilized to Iowa and successfully fumigated 11 of the country’s largest poultry structures at significantly lower cost than alternative treatment methods. Sabre conducted internal confirmation of complete viral elimination, which was further confirmed by the USDA.
Manufacturing Plant Cooling Water Effluent
BioWALL successfully decontaminated a 200+ acre lagoon in West Texas containing over 400 million gallons of heavily-contaminated water and 50 million gallons of hazardous sludge.
The lagoon emanated approximately 150,000 parts per million (ppm) of hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas which is lethal to humans in one breath at a concentration of 1,000 ppm. This facility was fined in excess of $120,000 per day for their failure to remediate the sources of odor and the untreated toxic sludge. Within 24 hours of beginning operations, BioWALL was able to completely eliminate toxic gas release from the lagoon and, after a few weeks, treat all 450 million gallons of toxic fluids in an environmentally friendly manner using its patented DiKlor™ oxidant technology.
Oil Production Lagoon System
A lagoon system containing 1.5 million barrels (63,000,000 gallons) of produced oilfield fluid was completely remediated by BioWALL in the Central United States.
This fluid was heavily-contaminated with residual crude oil, hydrogen sulfide, heavy metals and a slew of other chemicals used in the energy industry. BioWALL used its DiKlor℠ and SabreSMART℠ treatment technologies to remediate all water to the point where it has become a haven for wildlife as well as a substitute for freshwater use in the oilfield, saving hundreds of millions of gallons per year in precious groundwater.
Restoring Ecosystem Balance in Contaminated Lagoon
In the Southeast United States, a large naturally-occurring lagoon containing over 2 billion gallons of water was contaminated by industrial effluent and bacterial growth.
This 1,500-acre lagoon was home to a wide variety of wildlife that was being adversely affected by pollutants from paper mill operations. Additionally, release of toxic gases from the lagoon was threatening a nearby community. Using its DiKlor™ oxidant technology, BioWALL was able to restore the microbiological balance in the ecosystem, protecting both the community and the environment with a sustainable and ecologically-friendly system.
